New awards boost LIFE Builds workload

Regional construction company LIFE Build Solutions has boosted its order books with a clutch of new awards, securing a strong foundation for the year ahead.

Latest awards include over £11 million of work for independent schools in London and Oxfordshire, plus a new church building in Slough, worth £1.7 million.

LIFE Build Solutions director Ken Adams said: We finished 2007 on turnover of over £8 million and we’re on track to achieve £15 million for 2008. Our trading prospects for 2009 are also looking good, with over £10 million of work secured already for next year.

Since starting in early 2005, we have continued to grow in size and capabilities, so we’re now aiming to broaden our range of projects to include values up to £10 million. We are in a strong position to cope with prevailing economic conditions, having built up a healthy workload, especially in education.

A large slice of the company’s new work comes from repeat orders, which account for over 70 per cent of this year’s business.

In education, LIFE Build has gained top marks from Ibstock Place School in Clarence Lane, Roehampton, with an £8.3 million follow-on contract for the construction of new accommodation embracing 16 classrooms, six science laboratories, plus a library and resource centre.

Starting with preliminary demolition work at the end of this year, the 78-week contract, comprising 3,500 square metres of linked three and four-storey blocks, continues through to spring 2010. This follows a £2.2 million award for a new sports hall and changing facilities, opening for the autumn term.

At Cokethorpe Independent School in Witney, Oxfordshire, Home Counties-based Life Build is embarking on a £2.8 million scheme to create a two storey building housing a dining hall and kitchen, plus sixth-form area above. The 46-week project finishes next summer.

Meanwhile, at Collegiate School in Berkhamsted, LIFE Build is finishing off its third award in a year £450,000 of extension and refurbishment work to school property. This comes on the heels of a new sports pavilion and a two-storey arts extension, worth together £1.1 million.

In social housing, its work for London & Quadrant Housing Association continues with an £800,000 scheme at Orchardville, in Burnham, Buckinghamshire, for an eco-sustainable residential block of five terraced homes. Finishing early next year, this project was negotiated on the strength of a £1m residential brownfield development Life Build undertook last year for L&Q in Garvin Avenue, Beaconsfield.

In Britwell, Slough, the company has started building a new CoE church for the parish of St George. The £1.7 million scheme will be ready next spring.

Following its epic performance in building a signature gatehouse at Pinewood Studios, Buckinghamshire, in just 14 weeks, Life Build is back, creating 3,700 square metres of new film laboratories for cinema giant Technicolor. On track for completion this autumn, the £7 million work covers constructing and fitting out the three-storey structure.
