New Performing Arts centre, Ibstock Place School, Roehampton, London SW15

The Performing Arts Centre was our third major project for the school. Accommodating the very ambitious brief on a tight, sloping site closely bordered by mature trees was a challenging proposition which ultimately gave rise to an exciting and luxurious set of internal and external spaces.

The contract commenced with the formation of a temporary site entrance on a restricted site and the demolition of the existing hard court play area between the Prep and the Pre-Pep school. The design for the construction of a two storey Performing Arts Centre incorporated a 300-seat auditorium and all those facilities one would expect to find in a modern fully-equipped theatre: fly tower, motorised orchestra elevator, green room, wardrobe, scenery workshops and dressing rooms.

The auditorium seating is retractable to create a versatile space that can also be used for theatre-in-the-round and a multitude of other events. The building also contains a passenger lift, bar area, cloakroom and office accommodation. A new electrical sub-station was incorporated into the scheme. The external works included new drainage and services trenches, hard and soft landscaping, fencing and planting works.
