St Helen’s Music School, Northwood, London

Returning to St Helen’s School for a third contract, LIFE Build were awarded the construction of the new Music Building, The Mary Short of Music.

The new music building commenced with the demolition of the Claremont Building, a Victorian house on the same site which the School were permitted to demolish because of the quality of its replacement. The brick and terracotta-clad two storey building was constructed on piled foundations with a complicated steel multi-pitched roof. The interior included a feature spiral staircase and houses music teaching classrooms, individual and group practice rooms, a music technology suite, recording studio and performance space and takes its name from Dr Mary Short, Headmistress from 2011 to 2019.
